XKCD's latitude

In the previous post I showed that the difference between the summer solstice and the day when the latest sunset occurs varies by latitude, with a very small difference near the arctic circle and a very large one near the equator. Since a character in this XKCD comic states the difference is six days, we can narrow down the range of latitudes the character is talking about.

Here's a plot of the number of days between the summer solstice and the day of the latest sunset, by latitude:

The number of days between summer solstice and latest sunset varies by latitude.

A difference of six days falls here:

5°N10°N15°N20°N25°N30°N35°N40°N45°N50°N55°N60°N65°N0 days2 days4 days6 days8 days10 days12 days14 days16 days18 days20 days22 days24 days26 days28 days
There is a difference of six days between summer solstice and latest sunset at latitudes between the latitudes of 41.3°N and 45.3°N.

That covers latitudes 41.3°N to 45.3°N. In North America, that covers this area:

Map of English-speaking latitudes between 41.3°N and 45.3°N
Area of the United States where the summer solstice and latest sunset are six days apart.

The characters in the comic are speaking English, and outside of North America this range of latitudes doesn't traverse any dominantly English-speaking countries, so it seems reasonable to assume the comic takes place somewhere in the above part of the United States or Canada.
